Halifax RUFC
Hessle RUFC

Report by Grayham Smith

Halifax maintained their improving form at Ovenden Park and the final score showed that they are capable of rousing play with the three quarters and the forwards alike .

Hessle had a long journey from the east coast and must have been reflecting on those and team raising difficulties . Halifax demonstrated, from kick off, that they would be in charge since Hessle had no share of the ball for 10 minutes during which Halifax opened the account with a drive close in by the pack feeding captain Callum Bowmer with the try. Kyle Maude converted .

Hessle were under pressure – a fact indicated by a second rower being yellow carded. The Halifax pack brought their scrummaging skills into play and keeping their shape. With a man down in the Hessle pack, Halifax were able to drive straight from 15 meters out. At the line, scrum half Heppenstall had no problem in picking the ball up and scoring.

30 minutes into the match saw Hessle mounting an attack with a good chip into the corner and touch down, improved by the kicker.

Close to half time, Halifax were on the offensive again with a well taken line out, catch and drive, the touch down made by ever active, back row Dwayne West. Maude converted. 19 – 7 half time.

In the second half, Hessle were no match for Halifax. Within minutes Maude ( fly half ) brought backs and forwards into unstoppable play which was completed by prop Danny Sullivan. The Halifax three quarters combined to show their good handling; Maude and Elliot Jewett showed their sharpness; Hessle had no answer to it .

Further tries were in the second half by Jewett, Bowmer( 2 ), West and Heppenstall. The last try by Bowmer was a splendid effort as Heppenstall careered down the right wing; he was about to be tackled into touch but had the skill to chip the ball inside and towards the try line, leaving Bowmer only to pick and carry the ball over the try line .
